What’s happening in Italy with the brain worm outbreak

With the country still reeling from the coronavirus pandemic, there are more than 2,000 confirmed cases of brain worm infections reported since the start of the year.

In total, about 300,000 people have been infected in Italy.

A further 6,000 have been confirmed in the neighbouring countries of Austria and Slovenia.

The country has been the focus of a massive effort to contain the virus, with the authorities taking steps such as a mandatory immunisation programme for schoolchildren, a nationwide ban on all foreign travel and strict travel restrictions.

A report published by the World Health Organisation said in December that the coronabovirus was “very likely to return” and that the numbers of cases could rise as a result.

Here are the latest developments in the country.
